the simpleton
(for November 16 2009)
“Hello?,” he said in a groggy voice. Immediately I understood that I had woken him up from deep slumber just to greet him a happy birthday.
My brother is nineteen now. Two years more and he’ll be celebrating his debut. I know Im supposed to be blogging about someone I met but since it’s his birthday I decided to make an exception. Plus in the terms of the blog I did stipulate that I would also blog about people I already know if I learn something new about them or saw a different side of them for the first time. That qualifies as a “meeting” after all.
My brother possesses something that I lack, an artistic sense. He is an artist of different sorts of media. When he was in elementary, he used to come up with amazing sketches and drawings. His lines weren’t the most straight ones, the pictures weren’t the most precise but he had this way of getting the message across with a hint of his personal style.
He stepped on to college and took up Fashion Design and Merchandising because he believed that dressing up is a form of art. It is yet another way for one to express his artistic side. Less than a year after, he discovered something he was more passionate about, exploring different forms of art, trying to combine them together and so he decided to shift to the course, Multimedia Arts.
And today, my brother showed me his first painting on canvas. I’ve seen him work with markers, with spray pain and today I saw him use oil-based paint. And then it hit me, it surprised me that it had been there all along and yet I failed to recognize that side of him. Simplicity. That was the common thread that bound all my brother’s artworks regardless of what media he had utilized.
Nikko is a simple boy. And I don’t know that many simple boys. His art is simple yet nothing short of beautiful. He thinks in simple terms and that’s why he opted for a simple dinner with our family to celebrate his birthday. Unlike me, I would’ve wanted to do something new, go all grand and I don’t know maybe change my hair color for my birthday. I once had blue hair by the way, which turned into moss green after a few weeks. Anyway back to Nikko. And the way he puts love is simple. Once I told him that he was young and that he could go on and try dating many girls, try experiencing different types of girls and having different kinds of relationships. After all, that’s how most of the men or boys operate. They treat their love life like a buffet, trying a little bit of everything, indulging in something that’s better than the others yet still not settling for that dish.
But he answered me, “I don’t have to keep looking for other girls when I’ve found the one.” And for a bit I was stunned. Because yes, it’s really that simple.
